New Delhi, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Delhi High Court has called for responses from the central government, Delhi University (DU), and the Delhi government regarding the provision of hostel facilities for students. This request follows a tragic building collapse in Satya Niketan on September 6. The court will hear the public interest litigation (PIL) related to this issue on September 25.
The PIL urges that all relevant authorities ensure that hostels are available for students at all colleges operated by Delhi University. The petitioner emphasized the necessity of providing safe and adequate housing to prevent students from having to rely on insecure private accommodations.
In a related development, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) organized a ‘Nyay Yatra’ at DU’s North Campus on Tuesday to protest the incident. The organization is demanding justice for the students who lost their lives and is advocating for enhanced safety in student housing across the capital. They have called for the public release of safety audit reports for private hostels and PG accommodations, arguing that such transparency would help students make informed housing choices based on safety standards.
ABVP also highlighted the need for sufficient hostel facilities for students, claiming that the current number is inadequate, forcing many to depend on private accommodations. They are pushing for regular safety inspections of all hostels and PGs, urging timely action against buildings that fail to meet safety regulations. The organization insists that proactive safety measures should be prioritized over reactive responses following accidents.
The building collapse on September 6 resulted in a joint rescue operation by the National Disaster Response Force, Delhi police, fire department, district administration, and health department. So far, seven fatalities have been confirmed as a result of this tragic event.
