Kolkata, June 7: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari stated on Sunday that corruption has permeated every aspect of government operations during the 15 years of Trinamool Congress rule from 2011 to 2026. He emphasized that the impact of this corruption is becoming evident now that the new state government has taken office.
Adhikari affirmed the government’s commitment to fulfilling the promises made in their election manifesto. However, as they progress in governance, the cases of corruption that flourished during the Trinamool Congress era are surfacing in all administrative sectors. He noted that the current reform homes in the state are nearing capacity, necessitating the construction of a separate jail at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata. Nonetheless, he reiterated their determination to honor their electoral commitments.
Speaking at a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) event in New Town, Kolkata, Adhikari assured the public that they would benefit from the transparent actions of their government over the next 50 years.
He cited the previous government’s Lakshmi Bhandar monthly allowance scheme as a prime example of widespread corruption. Upon replacing it with the Annapurna scheme, they uncovered the extent of corruption that had been occurring under the earlier program.
Initially, the Lakshmi Bhandar scheme had 2.2 million beneficiaries. However, they discovered that 2.7 million names were not even on the voter list, and approximately 300,000 male beneficiaries were receiving benefits under this scheme.
Additionally, he conveyed a message about the importance of collective leadership to the BJP workers present at the event.
“I have previously stated that it will be ‘we’ and not ‘I.’ Today, I reiterate that we must work together. Politics in this state is a year-round affair and differs from other states. The BJP’s ideology, the Prime Minister‘s assurances, and the public’s expectations must take precedence. We need to build strong relationships among ourselves,” he concluded.
