Agartala, September 3: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura has requested the postponement of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list, considering the upcoming Gram Panchayat elections scheduled for September 28.
A delegation from the BJP, led by Rajib Bhattacharjee, a Rajya Sabha MP and former state president of the party, submitted a letter to the state election officials addressed to the Election Commission of India (ECI). The letter urged that the SIR process be delayed until after the completion of the Gram Panchayat elections.
After leading the delegation, Bhattacharjee informed the media that a significant number of officials, Booth Level Officers (BLOs), and political party agents will be engaged in the electoral process during the Gram Panchayat elections under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
He stated that the SIR process could commence once the Gram Panchayat elections are concluded. The state election officials will forward the BJP’s letter to the Election Commission for further action.
Previously, Tripura’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Brijesh Pandey announced that the SIR process for all 60 assembly seats would begin on September 5 and conclude with the final publication of the voter list on December 23, 2026.
The draft of the voter list is set to be published on October 21, 2026. Currently, Tripura has a total of 2.897 million voters, comprising 1.452 million male and 1.445 million female voters, across 3,356 polling stations.
According to the CEO, during the SIR, BLOs will visit households from September 15 to October 14 to distribute pre-filled enumeration forms to existing voters. They will assist voters in accurately filling out the forms and will collect the completed forms. Each BLO is required to visit every household three times.
The eligibility date for the SIR in Tripura is set for October 1, 2026. The CEO has confirmed that BLOs have already received training to ensure the smooth and error-free completion of the process.
Meanwhile, the Gram Panchayat elections in TTAADC areas are set to take place after a decade on September 28. Voting will occur for a total of 4,597 seats across 2,634 constituencies under 587 Gram Panchayats. In areas outside the TTAADC, Gram Panchayats function similarly to local bodies within tribal autonomous council regions.
The TTAADC administers nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s total geographical area of 10,491 square kilometers, home to over 1.216 million residents, approximately 84% of whom belong to indigenous tribal communities.
Following the 60-member assembly, the TTAADC is considered the second most significant constitutional and political body in the state.
