Shillong, September 3: The National People’s Party (NPP) commended Meghalaya Chief Minister and party president Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday for the state government’s firm stance against uranium mining. This recognition took place during an event in Tura, where newly elected Rajya Sabha member James P.K. Sangma was also honored.
Senior NPP leaders and representatives from the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) attended the event. During the proceedings, NPP leaders praised the Chief Minister for the Meghalaya Assembly’s resolution opposing uranium mining in the state.
The party described this action as a significant step towards protecting Meghalaya’s environment, natural resources, and the interests of its people. NPP leadership highlighted Sangma’s position on this contentious issue, asserting that the state government has adopted a clear stance in response to the concerns of the people and communities of Meghalaya regarding uranium mining.
The Chief Minister was also recognized for facilitating changes in regulations to ease the process of starting separate voter lists for the GHADC. Party leaders stated that this move would strengthen the functioning of the Autonomous District Council and improve its electoral processes.
During the event, the Chief Executive Member of GHADC, Dharmnath Sangma, Deputy Chief Executive Member Stevie Marak, and other executive members and council members were also honored. The council leadership was praised for several administrative reforms, including the initiation of separate voter lists, digitization of tax collection and trading license issuance, and the implementation of service rules within the GHADC.
NPP leaders emphasized that these reforms would enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability in the operations of the Autonomous Council. The party’s appreciation of Conrad Sangma’s stance against uranium mining comes at a time when proposals for uranium mining in Meghalaya have faced long-standing opposition, with environmental protection and community concerns at the forefront of the debate.
The NPP stated that the government’s initiatives reflect its efforts to strengthen grassroots institutions while safeguarding the interests of the state’s people. The recognition ceremony also provided the party with a platform to outline its political priorities, which include strengthening autonomous institutions, improving governance, and addressing issues deemed crucial for Meghalaya’s environment and communities.
