Chandigarh, September 3 (Daily Kiran) : Leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Bikram Singh Majithia and Daljit Singh Cheema, have launched a fierce critique of the Punjab government, focusing on accusations of rape, corruption, and alleged human rights violations. The SAD leaders submitted nearly 300 documents to the Governor, urging intervention in these matters. They also announced a protest outside Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s residence on September 5.
Majithia claimed that police have been intimidating and suppressing rape victims in Punjab. He questioned the roles of Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav and Chief Minister Mann, pointing out that police actions in several cases raise serious concerns. Citing specific FIRs and statements recorded under Section 164, he criticized the police’s handling of these allegations. He alleged that individuals facing serious charges have been released without proper investigation.
He noted that four letters have already been submitted to the High Court regarding assistance for victims and action against offenders, while the police continue to demand evidence. Majithia accused the police of violating Supreme Court guidelines and questioned whether they would act against corruption or facilitate it. He emphasized that the SAD has presented around 300 documents to the Governor, warning that failure to act promptly could lead to a serious situation.
Majithia also condemned the Punjab government for its lax response to corruption allegations, stating that while political action used to occur for minor claims, there seems to be no accountability for larger corruption cases now.
Responding to Minister Aman Arora’s statement about the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Majithia questioned his authority to comment, noting that the ED has filed four letters in the High Court. He suggested that the lack of action may stem from potential implications for government officials involved in ongoing investigations.
Daljit Singh Cheema highlighted the gravity of alleged injustices faced by women in two rape cases in Punjab. He claimed that serious allegations involving an American citizen and a purported transaction of five crore rupees have surfaced against the Chief Minister’s wife and relatives, calling for a fair investigation into these claims. The SAD’s women’s wing, led by former Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal, is set to demonstrate outside the Chief Minister’s residence on September 5, showing solidarity with the victims.
Regarding accusations from Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha about the SIR process, Cheema explained that it is under the Election Commission’s supervision. He mentioned that individuals whose mapping was not completed in 2003 have until September 12 to submit documentation. He stated that it would be premature to draw conclusions about irregularities before the process is finalized. If injustices occur after the deadline, then it would be appropriate to raise concerns.
