Congress Unveils First Candidate List for Assam Assembly Elections 2026

New Delhi, March 3: The Indian National Congress has released its first list of candidates for the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. According to an official press release from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the party’s central election committee has announced candidates for a total of 42 constituencies. Notably, sitting MP Gaurav Gogoi will contest from the Jorhat seat.

Assam has a total of 126 assembly seats. In the 2021 assembly elections, Congress secured only 29 seats. This time, the party is gearing up for a stronger comeback, making the release of this candidate list significant. The list features candidates from the Brahmaputra Valley, Barak Valley, Northern Assam, and Eastern regions. Special attention has been given to reserved seats for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). Several women candidates have also been nominated, reflecting the party’s inclusive strategy.

Candidates include Abdus Sobahan Ali from Gauripur, Markline Marak from Golpara West (ST), Girish Barua from Bongaigaon, and Mahananda Sarkar from Barpeta (SC). Ramen Singh Rabha from Boko-Chaygaon (ST), Nandita Das from Hajo-Sualkuchi (SC), Satyabrata Kalita from Kamalpur, and Meera Borthakur Goswami from Dispur are also on the list.

Congress has fielded Diganta Barman from Barkhetri, Ashok Kumar Sarma from Nalbari, and Ratul Patowari from Tihu. Other candidates include Binanda Kumar Saikia from Sipajhar, Bubul Das from Jagiroad (SC), Nurul Huda from Rupninat, and Tanjil Hussain from Samaguri.

Additionally, Utpal Gogoi from Sonari, Ajay Kumar Gogoi from Demow, Debabrata Saikia from Nazira, Indranil Pegoo from Majuli (ST), Pallavi Saikia Gogoi from Tiok, and Gaurav Gogoi from Jorhat will also contest. Other notable candidates include Bitupan Saikia from Golaghat, Ratan Engti from Boka Jan (ST), Augustine Enghi from Rongkhong (ST), and M. Shanti Kumar Singha from Lakhimpur.

According to AICC sources, this is the first list, and the remaining candidates will be announced soon. The party has selected candidates based on local issues such as floods, unemployment, tea garden workers’ problems, and border security. A mix of young and experienced faces has been given opportunities.
