Awami League Condemns Murder of Youth Leader in Bangladesh, Calls for Fair Investigation

Dhaka, June 12: The Awami League of Bangladesh has strongly condemned the murder of a party worker in Jessore district. The party stated that this incident highlights ongoing concerns about political violence, the culture of impunity, and the protection of basic human rights in the country.

According to local media reports, Jewel Ahmed Rana, a 40-year-old local leader of the Awami League’s youth wing, Jubo League, succumbed to his injuries after being attacked in the Chaugachha sub-district of Jessore on Thursday morning. His family has alleged that leaders and activists from the local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were involved in the attack.

The Awami League remarked, “The right to life is a fundamental human right, protected by both the Constitution of Bangladesh and international human rights laws. Eyewitness accounts and family testimonies indicate that a comprehensive, fair, and transparent investigation into this incident is imperative.”

The party emphasized, “According to human rights principles, allegations of politically motivated violence must be investigated impartially, and all suspects should be afforded due process under the law. Victims and their families also have the right to justice, truth, and effective redress.”

The Awami League expressed that this incident has heightened concerns about retaliatory violence following political changes in the country. Citing human rights activists, the party noted that warnings have long been issued regarding the cycle of retaliation, intimidation, and politically motivated attacks, which undermines the rule of law and fosters an atmosphere of fear in society.

Referring to the claims made by the victim’s family, the Awami League stated that despite being severely injured, Jewel Rana did not receive timely assistance, and his wife was also assaulted while attempting to help him.

The party added, “These allegations have not yet been independently verified, but if proven true, it would represent a serious violation of human dignity and fundamental human values.”

The Awami League insisted that this case illustrates the necessity for equal protection under the law for all citizens, regardless of their political beliefs or party affiliations.
