CBI Court Sentences Income Tax Officer to Five Years for Bribery in Mumbai

Mumbai, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai has handed down a five-year prison sentence to an income tax officer for accepting bribes. Satish Kumar Bhadaani, who was serving in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, was found guilty in a bribery case and also fined ₹1.5 lakh.

The court’s decision came from a case filed based on a written complaint by a taxpayer in Jalgaon. The complaint led to the registration of the case against Bhadaani on September 23, 2016. It was alleged that the officer had selected the taxpayer and his wife for a detailed scrutiny of their income tax returns. In exchange for not conducting a thorough investigation and issuing a favorable assessment order, Bhadaani demanded an improper benefit.

To catch the officer in the act, the CBI set up a sting operation, during which he was apprehended while accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 from the complainant. Following the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against him on December 28, 2016, and charges were framed on December 20, 2021. After a trial, the court convicted Bhadaani and imposed the sentence accordingly.

In a separate incident, the CBI recently arrested a woman named Jharnam Mistry, who was a declared fugitive in connection with a murder case linked to the violence following the 2021 West Bengal assembly elections. She was apprehended in the Santoshpur area of South 24 Parganas. Mistry had been on the run since an FIR was registered in 2021 and had not participated in any investigations or legal proceedings related to the case. The CBI had announced a cash reward of ₹50,000 for information leading to her arrest.
