Former Tax Officer Sentenced to Five Years for Accepting Bribe in Aurangabad

A former tax officer in Aurangabad has received a five-year prison sentence for accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 from a taxpayer.

Aurangabad, September 30 (Daily Kiran) : A special CBI court in Aurangabad has convicted former tax officer Satish Kumar Bhadhani in a significant corruption case that dates back nearly a decade. He has been sentenced to five years of rigorous imprisonment for soliciting and accepting a bribe from a taxpayer. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) announced the verdict on September 30, 2026.

In addition to the prison sentence, the court also imposed a fine of ₹1.5 lakh on Bhadhani. At the time of the offense, he was serving as an income tax officer in the Jalgaon office, specifically in Ward 2(2).

The case was initiated following a written complaint filed by a taxpayer in Jalgaon district on September 23, 2016. The complainant alleged that both he and his wife had been selected for a thorough investigation of their income tax returns by the tax department.

According to the complaint, Bhadhani demanded an undue advantage in exchange for not conducting a detailed review of the returns and issuing a favorable assessment order.

Acting on the complaint, the CBI launched an investigation and set a trap to confirm the allegations. During this operation, CBI officials caught Bhadhani red-handed while allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹40,000 from the complainant. This successful sting operation led to his arrest and the initiation of formal legal proceedings.

After completing the investigation, the CBI filed a charge sheet against Bhadhani on December 28, 2016. However, the judicial process took several years, and formal charges were only framed on December 20, 2021.

Following the examination of evidence and arguments presented during the trial, the CBI court found Bhadhani guilty of corruption-related offenses.

The court’s decision to impose a five-year prison term and a financial penalty is seen as a significant achievement in the efforts of anti-corruption agencies to combat bribery and abuse of power in government offices.

This case underscores the legal consequences for public servants who misuse their authority for personal gain and highlights the crucial role of investigative agencies in addressing corruption complaints. The CBI welcomed the verdict, marking the conclusion of a long-pending case nearly ten years after the initial complaint was filed.
