Patna, March 1: The road ahead for opposition parties in Bihar regarding the Rajya Sabha elections for five seats appears challenging. In this context, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) has convened a parliamentary board meeting on Sunday at 7 PM to discuss potential candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections.
Tejashwi Yadav, the national executive president of RJD, spoke to reporters upon returning to Patna from New Delhi. He confirmed that the parliamentary board meeting will finalize the candidate selection. During the conversation, he also extended birthday wishes to Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
Yadav expressed his hopes for Kumar’s good health. Discussions have emerged about Yadav himself being a candidate for the Rajya Sabha. Recently, RJD MLA Bhai Virendra advocated for Hina Saheb, the wife of former MP Shahabuddin, to be nominated for the Rajya Sabha.
Akhterul Iman, the state president of AIMIM in Bihar, has already made it clear that his party will field its own candidate rather than support anyone else. AIMIM is expected to play a significant role in this election, as the party has five MLAs. Without their support, it will be difficult for any opposition candidate to secure a win.
To note, a candidate needs the backing of 41 MLAs to win in the 243-member Bihar Assembly. Currently, the NDA holds a total of 202 MLAs, which positions them to easily win four seats. Even after winning four seats, they will have some votes left, but to secure the fifth seat, they will require support from additional MLAs.
The opposition coalition, led by the RJD, comprises a total of 35 MLAs. They will also need support from other legislators to secure a win for one seat.
