Guwahati, June 21: The European Union (EU) has lifted its travel restrictions on Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised this decision on Saturday.
Sarma announced on the social media platform ‘X’ that following Australia and Japan, EU member states have also revised their travel advisories, removing restrictions for their citizens traveling to Assam.
He stated, “Good news for Assam. After Australia and Japan, EU member countries have changed their travel advisories and lifted restrictions for their citizens visiting the state. This decision, following the recent visit of EU diplomats, reflects confidence in Assam and is a positive sign for deeper EU-Assam relations.”
The Chief Minister expressed special gratitude to His Excellency Herve Delphin, the EU Ambassador to India, for his support in advancing this initiative.
This decision is seen as a significant relief and encouragement for Assam’s tourism industry. For several years, some foreign nations had issued travel advisories against visiting Assam due to security concerns, which impacted the number of international tourists. With the lifting of the ban by EU countries, European tourists can now easily visit Assam. This is expected to revitalize the state’s tourist attractions, hotel industry, handicrafts, tea sector, and local economy.
The recent visit of EU diplomats and their positive feedback played a crucial role in this decision. It is anticipated that this will not only enhance tourism but also boost trade, investment, and cultural exchanges among people.
