
Washington, June 21: Delaware has officially joined the global celebration of International Yoga Day, as announced by Governor Matthew Meyer. On June 21, 2026, he issued a proclamation recognizing this ancient Indian practice within the state. This initiative honors yoga’s rich heritage and its significance for overall well-being.
In the official proclamation, Governor Meyer praised yoga as a “5,000-year-old ancient discipline from India that unites the mind, body, and spirit to promote holistic health and wellness.” The announcement emphasized the numerous benefits of yoga for physical and mental health. It stated, “Practicing yoga enhances physical strength, flexibility, mental clarity, and emotional balance, providing valuable tools for stress management and community health improvement.”
The Governor also noted that the United Nations officially recognizes June 21 as International Yoga Day to raise global awareness about the many benefits of yoga practice. The proclamation acknowledged the efforts of the Indian-American community in Delaware to celebrate this day.
It highlighted that the Indian-American community, in collaboration with the Indian Consulate in New York, is organizing local events to promote wellness, peace, and unity. Governor Meyer formally declared June 21 as International Yoga Day in Delaware and encouraged residents to embrace it for a healthier lifestyle.
International Yoga Day is celebrated worldwide every year, initiated by a proposal from India in 2014. Across the United Nations, Indian diplomatic missions and Indian-American organizations host yoga events in public spaces and community centers.
