Bhopal, July 29: Bhopal’s Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar met with a delegation of protesting farmers on Wednesday. The farmers’ movement, which demands the purchase of moong beans, an e-token system, and a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP), entered its third day. The police in the capital of Madhya Pradesh have implemented strict security measures.
During the meeting, farmers submitted a memorandum outlining their demands. Kumar assured them that the administration is committed to resolving issues through dialogue while maintaining law and order.
The Police Commissioner stated that all necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that the protests do not disrupt daily life in the city. He said, “We have taken all necessary measures to maintain law and order. Diversion routes have been established to prevent traffic issues. Detailed diversion plans have been shared through newspapers and social media. Diversion points have been set up on both sides of the routes, and adequate local police forces have been deployed.”
He added that the police are in constant contact with the protesting farmers and urged all parties to maintain peace. “Our priority is to promote dialogue while ensuring peace. We appeal to everyone for cooperation to maintain law and order,” Kumar said.
Meanwhile, members of the farmers’ union continued their sit-in at RRL Square, where they have been camped since Tuesday night. More supporters joined the protests throughout the day.
The police set up a four-tier barricade made of buses to stop a group of farmers marching towards the Chief Minister‘s residence near the Veer Savarkar Bridge at AMPRI Junction. Some protesters climbed the barricades but later descended after police intervention. They then sat on the road, chanting slogans against the state government.
Some farmers protested shirtless, demanding 100% purchase of moong beans, a legal guarantee for MSP, and resolution of other pending issues. One protester stated, “The police are stopping farmers at various locations. This should not be happening. More supporters are arriving at the protest site.”
Earlier on Wednesday morning, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced that the state government has formed a committee of ministers to engage in discussions with the farmers. He stated, “We welcome the farmers’ suggestions. The committee will discuss their issues, but it is also important to ensure that the general public does not face difficulties.”
Opposition leader Umang Singhar criticized the state government, asserting that merely forming a committee will not resolve farmers’ issues. The Congress party has also demanded 100% purchase of moong beans, improvements in fertilizer distribution, and prompt resolution of pending issues related to farmers.
