Dharamshala, August 28: A prayer service was held at the Dalai Lama Temple for the victims of the devastating disaster in Nepal. Tibetan Prime Minister Penpa Tsering stated that many Tibetan families have been affected, with some individuals reported missing. He assured that the Tibetan government will provide all possible assistance.
Prime Minister Tsering of the Tibetan government-in-exile mentioned, “In Rasuwagadhi, we have five small Tibetan settlements. Three of them are in higher areas, so they have not suffered damage. However, in the Rasuwagadhi Tibetan settlement, about 11 Tibetan families have been completely wiped out. Only two elderly men remain there, and we have no information about them yet.”
Tsering added, “Now, according to Indian news, it appears that the disaster originated 20 kilometers inside Tibet, while the Chinese government is attempting to claim it occurred within Nepal.”
The Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, expressed sorrow over the loss of life caused by the catastrophic floods in Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi area and Tibet’s Kyirong. He released a statement on Thursday to convey his feelings.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate stated, “I am saddened to learn about the devastating floods in Nepal’s Rasuwagadhi region and Tibet’s Kyirong. Many lives have been lost, and there has been significant structural damage due to this disaster. I pray for all those who have lost their lives and extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving families affected by this tragedy.”
He noted that since this region has experienced disasters before, these events are certainly indicative of deeper underlying causes, whether they be climate change or other factors.
The elderly Buddhist monk expressed hope that appropriate follow-up measures will be taken wherever possible to ensure that such disasters do not recur.
The floods crossed into Nepal via the Bhote Koshi River, leaving a trail of destruction.
