Jaipur, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has expressed significant concerns regarding the recent municipal elections in Rajasthan. He accused the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using administrative and police machinery to gain control over municipal boards.
In a statement, Gehlot criticized the ruling party for exceeding democratic boundaries in the formation of these boards. He described the situation as alarming, suggesting that it raises questions about the fairness of the electoral process.
Gehlot alleged that independent councilors were offered inducements, while Congress councilors faced notices, police summons, and various forms of pressure. He also claimed that police from neighboring states were present during the election period, noting that the Rajasthan High Court had to conduct late-night hearings on petitions related to the elections.
The former chief minister warned that such practices could set a troubling precedent ahead of upcoming Panchayat elections. He stated that bureaucrats and police officials appeared to be acting in favor of the ruling party.
Gehlot emphasized that actions undermining democratic norms would ultimately lead to accountability. He highlighted the risk of eroding public trust in institutions due to the misuse of money and government machinery.
He urged Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma to ensure that future elections are conducted in a manner that strengthens faith in democratic processes. These comments come at a time when Congress is preparing for Panchayat elections, and the results of the municipal elections have already sparked political debate in the state.
