Congress Accuses BJP and AIUDF of Collusion Ahead of Nagaon By-Election

Guwahati, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Congress General Secretary and Assam in-charge Bhupesh Baghel has leveled serious allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) leader Badruddin Ajmal. Speaking in Guwahati on September 21, Baghel claimed that their collusion is evident in the ongoing electoral battle in Nagaon.

Addressing the media, Baghel asserted that the political alliance between Sarma and Ajmal is clearly visible during the campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha by-election. “Nagaon is currently holding elections, and the partnership between Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal is apparent here,” he stated. However, he did not provide any specific incidents or evidence to back his claims.

Baghel’s comments come amid an increasingly competitive electoral atmosphere in Nagaon, where both Congress and the BJP-led alliance are working to strengthen their support before the polls on October 6. In a strategic move, Congress has released a list of 40 key campaigners for the Nagaon by-election, which includes senior party leaders from Assam and other states. This list was submitted to the Election Commission under Section 77(1) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, by Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal on September 16.

Prominent figures on the list include former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi, Congress MP Wajed Ali Chaudhary, former Assam Minister Rakibul Hussain, and party spokespersons Pawan Khera and Supriya Srinet. The list also features NSUI National President Uday Bhanu Chib and Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar.

Other senior leaders named as key campaigners include Debabrata Saikia, leader of the Assam Congress Legislative Party, former state Congress President Ripun Bora, former Minister Paban Singh Ghatowar, and several others. Congress is intensifying its efforts to garner support ahead of the by-election, aiming to strengthen its campaign in the constituency. The voting for the Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election is scheduled for October 6, with the counting of votes set for October 9. A multi-cornered contest is anticipated among Congress, BJP, and other political parties.
