Jamui, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Political tensions have escalated in Bihar following an alleged assault involving two minor students, including a girl, in Jamui district. The opposition has accused the government of failing to maintain law and order, while the ruling Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) has defended the administration’s actions.
Umesh Kushwaha, the state president of JD(U), characterized the incident as an isolated case. He emphasized that the government is sensitive to such issues and is taking action against those involved. “When such isolated incidents occur, we remain vigilant. But look at Bihar before 2005; people were afraid to step outside their homes. Today, at least when incidents happen, the administration responds,” he stated, assuring that those responsible will soon be in police custody.
Central Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, also known as Lalan Singh, echoed this sentiment, defending the Bihar police. He compared the current situation to the past, asserting that law and order in Bihar is now secure. Singh noted that women, who once feared going out after sunset, now feel safe enough to venture out at any hour.
In stark contrast, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) launched a fierce critique of the government. RJD spokesperson Shakti Singh Yadav claimed that the rule of law is deteriorating and questioned the government’s capability to protect women and girls. He demanded to know the whereabouts of the Bihar police and government, alleging a compromise on women’s dignity and safety.
According to KS Anupam, the Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order), three minor suspects have been detained, aged between 17 and 18. An FIR has been registered at the Jamui police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
To ensure a swift and impartial investigation, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed, overseen by the Local District Police Officer (LDPO) of Jamui. Police have identified approximately seven to eight young men whose alleged involvement is under scrutiny, along with verification of their criminal histories.
The police cyber team has initiated action to prevent the spread of related videos on social media. Anupam reported that 32 accounts have been targeted for removal, including 13 from Facebook, 12 from Instagram, and seven from X. He warned that sharing or reposting content that reveals the identity or image of the minor victim could lead to legal repercussions.
The incident reportedly occurred on September 19, between 6:25 and 6:30 PM, approximately three kilometers from the Jamui-Lakhisarai main road in a hilly area. The police are reviewing patrol arrangements in the vicinity to assess any lapses in policing.
Tensions remain high as the investigation unfolds, with both sides of the political spectrum calling for accountability and justice.
