Tura, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, inaugurated an expanded wing of the District Maternity and Child Hospital in Tura on Monday, September 21, 2026. This new addition includes 50 beds, bringing the hospital’s total capacity to 150.
Officials reported that the expanded facility features the first government neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the Garo Hills, an advanced special neonatal care unit (SNCU), a dedicated oxygen plant, and residential quarters for medical professionals.
During the inauguration, Sangma emphasized that the expansion will significantly improve access to timely and specialized maternal and neonatal healthcare for the residents of the Garo Hills. This development aims to reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region for treatment.
Sangma stated, “The facility expansion will enhance our ability to provide specialized care for mothers and newborns, ensuring that people receive quality healthcare close to home.” He highlighted the improvements in maternal health indicators in Meghalaya, noting that the maternal mortality rate has dropped from 244 to 107 over the past five years. The expanded hospital will strengthen the state’s capacity to offer specialized healthcare services to mothers and newborns.
This initiative aligns with the state government’s “Mission 1000 Days,” which focuses on maternal health, nutrition, and child development from pregnancy through the first two years of a child’s life.
The Chief Minister described the project as a significant step towards improving healthcare infrastructure in Garo Hills and complementing ongoing efforts to enhance connectivity, infrastructure, livelihoods, and opportunities for residents.
He dedicated the expanded facility to the people of Garo Hills, calling it a vital contribution to Meghalaya’s public health infrastructure. The new services are expected to enhance maternal and neonatal care and strengthen the region’s healthcare capacity. This inauguration comes at a time when the state government is focusing on improving health services and infrastructure, particularly for mothers and children.
