Mumbai, September 21 (Daily Kiran) : Maharashtra is grappling with severe drought conditions, leading to devastating crop losses. On Monday, Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal launched a scathing attack on the ruling Mahayuti government, accusing it of complete indifference to the plight of farmers during the festive season.
Addressing the media, Sapkal highlighted the desperate situation of farmers who are forced to cultivate their ruined crops. He criticized the government for merely making empty promises instead of providing direct financial assistance to farmers’ bank accounts.
“The government keeps claiming that the process has begun, yet immediate aid has not reached the farmers,” Sapkal stated. He also called the promise of loan waivers a complete falsehood.
During a meeting convened to discuss the dire drought situation, administrative officials were reportedly caught watching videos on their mobile phones, while ruling party MPs were seen snacking on dry fruits. Sapkal drew a parallel to past incidents where ministers were caught playing mobile games in the assembly.
Commenting on Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s recent remarks, Sapkal suggested they reflected concerns about the rising popularity of Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Students’ Echo’ initiative.
In a pointed response, he remarked that it seems Fadnavis’s mental health has deteriorated, advising him to “get well soon, Devendra ji.”
Sapkal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government of adopting a “divide and rule” strategy reminiscent of British colonial policies. He claimed the government is exacerbating social divisions over reservation issues affecting Marathas, Other Backward Classes (OBCs), and tribal communities.
The Congress party’s sharp criticism signals an escalating political confrontation in Maharashtra, as rural crises and delays in agricultural support become pressing issues ahead of upcoming state elections. The ruling administration has yet to issue an official response to the specific allegations made by the Congress leadership.
