West Bengal Government to Withdraw Cases Against Peaceful Protesters in RG Kar Incident

Kolkata, July 15: The West Bengal government has announced plans to withdraw cases against peaceful protesters, including doctors, who demonstrated against the RG Kar rape and murder incident in 2024. Under the previous Mamata Banerjee administration, FIRs were filed against those involved in the protests.

Sources from the state secretariat revealed that the government will initiate the withdrawal process based on recommendations from a judicial commission led by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Biswajit Basu. The commission aims to identify cases that were allegedly filed to suppress or harass protesters demanding justice for the RG Kar incident.

Additionally, the police administration will begin identifying individuals involved in vandalism and violence at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in North Kolkata, which occurred at midnight on August 14, 2024. Allegations suggest that the violence had two main objectives: to destroy evidence at the scene and to divert media attention from the protests against the rape and murder of a female doctor.

Notably, following the BJP’s rise to power in West Bengal, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the reopening of the RG Kar case. He also suspended three IPS officers, including former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, former DCP (North Division) Abhishek Gupta, and former DCP (Central Division) Indira Mukherjee, while initiating departmental inquiries against them.

Sources stated, “The new government‘s stance on the RG Kar case is clear.” They emphasized that the priority is to ensure that those directly or indirectly involved in attempts to tamper with evidence are punished, while also freeing peaceful protesters from unnecessary cases and harassment.
