Nashik, September 1: Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra and Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has raised several questions regarding the government’s actions. These include the Congress’s organizational creation program, the potential visit of Rahul Gandhi to Nashik, the controversy surrounding Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s trip to Uzbekistan, the Maratha reservation movement, and preparations for the Nashik Kumbh Mela.
Chavan announced that new district Congress presidents have been appointed under the All India Congress Committee’s organizational creation program. To educate these new officials about Congress policies, history, and organizational practices, a 10-day training camp is scheduled from September 24. Approximately 60-70 new district presidents have been appointed, with some districts having two to four presidents.
He mentioned that the training camp will feature lectures from around 30-40 speakers. Chavan himself attended the camp and indicated that he might participate in the closing program of Rahul Gandhi’s camp. However, he noted that the dates for Gandhi’s visit are not finalized yet, with September 1 or 2 being potential options.
Chavan condemned the FIR filed against Rahul Gandhi in Uttarakhand, calling it shameful. He highlighted that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, being a senior leader from the Dalit community, faced a purification incident after attending an event. Chavan demanded immediate FIRs against those responsible for this incident, emphasizing that an investigation should precede any actions against Rahul Gandhi.
Regarding Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Uzbekistan, Chavan welcomed the potential discussions on uranium procurement. He stated that if India can acquire uranium from Uzbekistan at a fair price, it should proceed with the purchase. The path for India to buy uranium from the international market opened after the India-U.S. nuclear agreement, which he described as a trade agreement that should benefit India.
On the Maratha reservation issue, Chavan commented on the announcement of a movement by Manoj Jarange Patil. He expressed uncertainty about the discussions and agreements made between the previous government and Patil. He noted that the resurgence of hunger strikes and protests indicates that promises made were not fulfilled, suggesting a potential breach of trust. Chavan urged the government to resolve the issues surrounding the movement and reservation through dialogue.
Concerning the upcoming Kumbh Mela in Nashik, Chavan stated that the government plans to spend around ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 crores. While Congress does not oppose spending on development projects, he insisted that the funds should address public needs and sustainable development. He questioned whether detailed project reports have been prepared for all major projects and if the opinions of Nashik’s residents have been considered. He called for public hearings, environmental impact assessments, and social impact assessments.
Chavan emphasized the need to evaluate the pressure on Nashik’s infrastructure due to the influx of pilgrims and tourists during the Kumbh. He advocated for the development of permanent facilities like roads, traffic management, and ring roads to ensure Nashik benefits even after the Kumbh. He also raised concerns about alleged irregularities in contracts and construction work, warning that corruption or kickbacks could waste public funds.
