UAE Welcomes UNSC Statement on Barakah Nuclear Plant Attack

Abu Dhabi, May 27: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has welcomed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) statement expressing “concern” over the drone attack on the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant that occurred on May 17.

The UAE mission to the UN shared the UNSC statement on the social media platform X. The UAE emphasized that the Council has sent a clear message that all attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE must cease immediately and permanently. This includes targeting or threatening peaceful nuclear facilities.

The mission also stated that those responsible for this “aggression” should be held accountable, including elements operating through proxy networks.

Previously, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had urged Iraq to prevent any hostile activities originating from its territory that could be linked to this drone attack.

The UNSC condemned the drone attack on the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in strong terms, describing it as a serious violation of international law and a significant threat to civilians, infrastructure, and the environment.

On May 26, the UNSC issued a statement condemning the Barakah attack. In this statement, UNSC members expressed deep concern regarding any attacks or threats against peaceful nuclear facilities, referencing relevant resolutions and decisions from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Assembly.

The Council also noted the IAEA Director General’s statement, which expressed serious concern over the incident, asserting that any military activity jeopardizing nuclear safety is unacceptable.

Members appealed to all nations to adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety and security and to avoid any actions that could threaten the safety of nuclear installations.

Additionally, they reiterated that the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has been designed, constructed, and operated according to international standards, functioning under the UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation and IAEA safety guidelines.

The drone attack on the UAE’s Barakah Nuclear Power Plant occurred on May 17, causing damage to a generator located outside the plant.
