Washington, May 27: Pakistan is striving to establish itself as a peace broker, taking on the role of mediator between the U.S. and Iran. However, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham has raised concerns about Pakistan’s involvement. He has questioned Islamabad’s intentions, particularly in light of the Abraham Accords.
On social media, Graham referenced a year-old post by Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, expressing his lack of trust in Pakistan as a mediator. He stated, “Pakistan is a significant problem as a mediator.”
According to Graham, Pakistan’s longstanding opposition to Israel, its negative stance, and reports of Iranian military aircraft being accommodated at Pakistani airbases are alarming.
Through his post, Graham urged Pakistan to respond to President Trump soon regarding its potential inclusion in the Abraham Accords. He noted, “The Defense Minister’s comments about the Abraham Accords are a year old, clearly indicating that Pakistan would never participate due to its distrust of Israel. This clip may be a year old, but I fear that sentiment remains unchanged.”
The Abraham Accords represent a crucial diplomatic agreement aimed at normalizing relations between Israel and several Arab nations. This initiative began in September 2020, facilitated by the United States, with the goal of fostering peace and cooperation in the Middle East, enabling direct contact and collaboration in trade, tourism, and security between Israel and Arab countries.
Under this initiative, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain were the first to establish formal relations with Israel, followed by Sudan and Morocco.
The name “Abraham” was chosen because it is associated with the prophet Ibrahim, who is revered in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, symbolizing brotherhood and peace.
In recent years, particularly during Donald Trump’s presidency and subsequent diplomatic discussions, efforts have intensified to include countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in this agreement. However, these nations have so far refused to recognize Israel.
