New Delhi, May 27: The Indian government’s Directorate General of Shipping has announced the successful release of ten Indian sailors from the MV Harbor Phoenix. These sailors were detained after their ship was stopped near the Jasak Port in Iran in July 2025 and were subsequently imprisoned.
After nearly 9-10 months in custody, they have now been freed. The Directorate General of Shipping confirmed the success of diplomatic efforts in a statement shared on social media. All sailors are reported to be safe, and preparations for their return to India are underway.
According to reports, the sailors were taken into custody following the ship’s detention near the Jasak Port in July 2025. Their families have been anxiously awaiting their safe return during their time in prison.
The government stated that the Ministry of External Affairs, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, the Indian Embassy in Tehran, the ship management company, and other relevant agencies collaborated on continuous diplomatic efforts. These collective efforts led to the successful release of all sailors.
Currently, all sailors are safe and have been reunited with one another. Arrangements are being made to bring them back to India as soon as possible.
The Directorate General of Shipping emphasized that the safety and welfare of Indian sailors working in any part of the world is a top priority for the government.
According to ship tracking websites, the MV Harbor Phoenix is an oil tanker registered under the flag of Palau. The Indian government adopted a quiet diplomatic strategy, avoiding public statements throughout the situation. It is believed that this restrained communication and ongoing diplomatic efforts facilitated the sailors’ release.
