Actor Parambrat Chattopadhyay Files Petition to Quash FIR in Kolkata High Court

Kolkata, May 27: Actor Parambrat Chattopadhyay has filed a petition in the Kolkata High Court seeking to quash an FIR registered against him last week at the Gariahat police station. He faces allegations of making inflammatory statements on social media and inciting violence following the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections.

The High Court has accepted the petition, and the case is likely to be heard on May 29 before a single-judge vacation bench led by Justice Ajay Kumar Mukherjee.

The FIR against Chattopadhyay was lodged based on a complaint by lawyer Jaydeep Sen. This complaint also led to an FIR against actress Swastika Mukherjee, who is accused of endorsing inflammatory posts.

Swastika Mukherjee appeared for questioning at the Gariahat police station on May 23 in response to a notice regarding the investigation, while Parambrat Chattopadhyay did not attend.

Instead, he opted to approach the High Court to seek the quashing of the FIR. Notably, BJP MLA and actor Rudranil Ghosh held a meeting at the Technician Studio on Wednesday, where Parambrat was also present.

During this meeting, the actor stated that he felt pressured to support the then Trinamool Congress government, influenced by former minister Arup Biswas and his brother Swaroop Biswas.

He remarked, “That day, looking at my newborn child’s face, I did everything I could. I had no other option. I am not here to take personal revenge. Since I consider you all family, I shared my personal humiliation. I hope such a situation does not arise in the future.”

A video of his statement has gone viral on social media, resulting in criticism from many who accuse the actor of backtracking on his previous stance. This statement led to the filing of complaints against him.
