Indian Government Closely Monitoring Ebola Situation Amidst Outbreak in South Africa

New Delhi, May 27: The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has stated that it is closely monitoring the rising Ebola virus outbreak in South Africa. Currently, there are no confirmed cases in India.

In a recent statement, the government emphasized that all necessary precautions are being taken to prevent the spread of the Ebola virus. A person who recently returned from Uganda exhibited some symptoms related to the virus and was promptly admitted to a hospital in Bengaluru. Fortunately, the symptoms were mild, including itching, and the individual was hospitalized as a precautionary measure to avoid any potential complications.

According to officials, despite the mild symptoms, the individual is in good health and experiencing no significant issues. Samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology for laboratory testing. Thankfully, the report for the Ebola virus has returned negative.

The health ministry has assured that it is coordinating with relevant state authorities to keep a close watch on the situation. Efforts are being made to ensure compliance with the guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO). Importantly, there have been no confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in India to date.

The government has intensified screening at all entry points, particularly at airports and health centers along border areas, to ensure thorough monitoring. Officials have advised the public not to panic and to refrain from spreading false rumors regarding the Ebola virus. They emphasized the importance of relying solely on official information.

Health officials reiterated their vigilance in light of the global rise in Ebola virus cases. They are committed to preventing any adverse situations arising from the outbreak. Additionally, the health department is strengthening its response mechanisms to curb the spread of the virus.

Meanwhile, according to data released by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is likely larger than confirmed figures suggest, with warnings that active infections are continuing to spread in affected areas.

Tedros reported on his social media platform that 101 cases have been confirmed, including 10 fatalities. However, he cautioned that the true scale of the outbreak is much higher, with over 900 suspected cases and 220 suspected deaths under investigation.

He also noted that new infections have emerged in neighboring Uganda, including two additional confirmed cases among healthcare workers, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to seven, including one death.

Tedros stated that WHO and partner agencies are ramping up response measures, with global health teams working to quickly identify infected individuals and enhance contact tracing and surveillance to break the chain of transmission.
