Washington, September 11 (Daily Kiran) : President Donald Trump recently signed legislation to create a National Medal of Honor Memorial in Washington, D.C. This memorial will pay tribute to more than 3,500 recipients of America’s highest military honor.
The signing took place during a ceremony at the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas, where Trump endorsed the Herschel ‘Woody’ Williams National Medal of Honor Memorial Location Act. The act is named after Woody Williams, the last surviving Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, who was honored for his bravery as a flamethrower operator during the Battle of Iwo Jima.
The Battle of Iwo Jima was a fierce and pivotal conflict fought between the United States and Japan from February 19 to March 26, 1945.
Trump stated, “This memorial will be entirely funded by private donations and will be located right in the heart of our nation’s capital, near the Lincoln Memorial.” He assured the museum foundation that they would secure a prime location in Washington. “We are going to get you the best spot in all of Washington,” he added.
The president emphasized the importance of the memorial, saying, “With this museum and a new memorial in Washington, America will never forget what Medal of Honor recipients have done and the risks they took.”
In a heartfelt tribute, Trump honored Williams, recalling how the Marine made significant strides during the Battle of Iwo Jima by repeatedly advancing through enemy positions and destroying machine gun nests. “In the Battle of Iwo Jima, he paved the way for American victory, allowing our soldiers to advance and win,” Trump remarked.
The Medal of Honor is awarded to U.S. service members who distinguish themselves through extraordinary acts of bravery while risking their lives. Fewer than 4,000 individuals have received this prestigious award.
The National Medal of Honor Museum opened last year in Arlington and is part of a three-part project that includes the planned memorial in Washington. According to Jones, the institution has reached over 300,000 students across more than 29,000 schools.
