PM Modi Secures Permanent Membership for African Union at G20, Strengthening Global South Partnerships

New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The 18th BRICS Summit is currently underway at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where journalists from around the world are discussing India’s pivotal role and the significance of the conference. Many have highlighted India’s commitment to amplifying the voice of the Global South on the global stage.

Siabonga Goodman, a journalist from South Africa’s National Media Group, remarked on the BRICS Summit, stating, “I want to begin by recalling that during India’s G20 presidency in 2023, it was Prime Minister Modi who pushed for the African Union to be granted permanent membership. From this perspective, as a South African and an African, I believe India has genuinely led efforts to ensure that the Global South community becomes a key partner in multilateral discussions. Now, as we talk about BRICS, we are moving beyond a unipolar world. Many of us view BRICS as an essential institution.”

Odoh Innocent, head of the diplomatic desk at Nigeria’s Leadership Newspaper, commented on the bilateral trade between Nigeria and India. He noted, “Trade between Nigeria and India has been significant. A few years ago, our trade volume was around $27 billion, which has now decreased to approximately $14.9 billion. However, with strengthened ties, we aim to restore our trade to the original $27 billion and beyond. This BRICS Summit has indeed opened more opportunities for us to engage with India and other BRICS members across various economic sectors.”

Alya Mohammed Obaid Ali Aldhanhani, a senior journalist with Khaleej Times, expressed her views on the growing UAE-India relationship and expectations from the BRICS Summit. She praised India’s role, saying, “India’s role at the BRICS Summit has been remarkable. They are hosting the event exceptionally well, showcasing fantastic hospitality that draws leaders from around the world to participate.”

On the India-UAE relationship, she added, “Seeing His Highness Sheikh Khalid bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the BRICS Summit is a moment of great honor and pride. Our relationship with India has long been rooted in investment, tourism, and business.”

She concluded by emphasizing the main objectives of the BRICS Summit, stating, “I believe that fostering more business connections and enhancing engagement with countries around the world is the primary goal we are witnessing at this summit.”
