New Delhi, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on September 12, 2026. The meeting took place as Ibrahim was in India to participate in the 18th BRICS Summit.
During their discussions, the leaders explored ways to strengthen cooperation in various sectors, including defense, trade, digital technology, and semiconductors. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement detailing the meeting’s highlights.
PM Modi warmly welcomed Ibrahim and praised Malaysia’s participation as a partner country in the BRICS Summit. They reviewed the outcomes of Modi’s visit to Malaysia in February 2026, focusing on advancements in bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, defense and security, semiconductors, infrastructure, the digital economy, energy, fintech, education, tourism, and people-to-people connections. Ibrahim also expressed Malaysia’s agreement to open a consulate in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
Modi acknowledged Malaysia’s ongoing support in strengthening ASEAN-India relations. Both leaders exchanged views on key regional and global issues of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership between India and Malaysia.
Ibrahim arrived in New Delhi on Friday, welcomed warmly at the airport by Minister of State for External Affairs, Kirti Vardhan Singh. During his visit, the Malaysian Prime Minister is also scheduled to meet with the Grand Mufti of India in Kerala.
As the BRICS chair for 2026, India is hosting the 18th Summit in New Delhi from September 12-13. The BRICS group includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates, with partner countries like Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
