Lucknow, August 10: A tragic incident has emerged from the Etawah police lines, marking the second suicide of a woman in just a month. On July 2, the wife of a constable took her own life, and now, Priyanka, a female constable from the 2019 batch stationed at Saifai police station, has died after consuming a toxic substance. Her husband, Rajat, has been arrested in connection with the case.
Originally from Saharanpur, Priyanka was living in the Etawah police lines. After ingesting the poisonous substance, her condition deteriorated rapidly. She was rushed to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Government Combined Hospital. Due to the severity of her condition, she was referred to PGI Saifai, where she ultimately passed away.
Following the incident, police officials visited the medical university to investigate the matter and have initiated action based on the complaint filed by Priyanka’s family.
According to Priyanka’s elder brother, Saurabh, she met Rajat Kumar, a resident of Saharanpur, through Instagram. Their relationship blossomed into love, leading to their marriage about three years ago. However, disputes began shortly after their wedding. Rajat allegedly intimidated Priyanka, even going so far as to shut down her social media accounts. The family claims that Priyanka was deeply troubled by her husband’s behavior, leading to ongoing conflict and stress in their marriage.
Saurabh revealed that Rajat had previously taken out a loan of five lakh rupees and was pressuring Priyanka for another five lakh. Priyanka’s father, Nathiram, accused Rajat in his complaint of demanding a loan of seven lakh rupees. Nathiram stated that Priyanka’s family had already provided a Bolero car, a motorcycle, and around two lakh rupees in cash for the wedding. He also mentioned that he sold two bighas of land to cover wedding expenses, yet Rajat continued to demand more money.
The family has alleged that Rajat physically abused Priyanka regularly. Distressed by her husband’s alleged harassment, Priyanka had stayed at her parental home for about eight months. Nathiram claims that the continuous violence, mental distress, and financial pressure led his daughter to take such a drastic step. He has filed a complaint at the Civil Lines police station, seeking legal action against Rajat. The police have registered a case and are investigating the allegations of dowry harassment, physical abuse, and financial demands.
Avnish Kumar Singh, the City Magistrate of Etawah, confirmed that a case has been registered at the Civil Lines police station regarding the consumption of the toxic substance by the female constable and her subsequent death at PGI Saifai. Rajat has been arrested, and necessary legal actions are underway.
