Bangkok, August 10: A shooting incident occurred on Monday in the outskirts of Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. The shooter is reported to be a 71-year-old former Member of Parliament.
According to local media outlet Bangkok Post, the incident took place at the Provincial Administration Organization (PAO) office, where the shooter fatally shot the organization’s chairman, Thongchai Yenprasert. Following the attack, former MP Chaloung Rivereng was apprehended.
Chaloung is accused of forcibly entering the office of Colonel Thongchai in the Muang district and opened fire around 11 AM. The PAO chairman received cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene before being transported to Franangklau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
After the incident, Chaloung was arrested on murder charges. Major General Dejarapi Kongdi, the provincial police commander, stated that the suspect, a former MP, fired at a senior official and his driver.
Dejarapi informed Reuters, “Two individuals were injured and have been sent to the hospital for treatment.”
As reported by the Bangkok Post, Chaloung Rivereng has served three terms as an MP and was recently affiliated with the Future Thai Party. He was dubbed the “Cobra” in Thai politics back in 1997 for voting for a prime ministerial candidate from another party.
Thongchai Yenprasert, the victim, was a former police officer and currently served as the chairman of the Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organization. The motive behind the murder remains unclear, and police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
This shooting follows a tragic event on Friday when a 14-year-old opened fire at Debsirinin Nonthaburi School in the same area, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals, including teachers and students. The teenager reportedly killed his elderly grandparents before arriving at the school and later took his own life.
