Guwahati, August 10: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the dispute arising from clashes between the people of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in Dhemaji district has now been resolved. This resolution follows proactive steps taken by officials from both states, addressing issues related to the border area.
CM Sarma stated that the Assam government had instructed its minister, chief secretary, and police director general to engage in discussions with their counterparts in Arunachal Pradesh. Additionally, he emphasized the need to restore peace in the affected areas.
Tensions escalated following recent gunfire in the Mingmang settlement near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, resulting in the tragic loss of 18 lives, with four individuals reported in critical condition.
Initial reports suggest that the clashes stemmed from a land encroachment dispute near the border area. An unidentified individual from Arunachal Pradesh reportedly initiated the gunfire, leading to multiple injuries.
The injured were first taken to a nearby hospital, while the critically injured four were later admitted to Assam Medical College and a hospital in Dibrugarh for further treatment.
This incident is linked to a separate shooting involving a missing youth near the Kangkhu circle in Lower Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The boundary of Lower Siang adjoins Dhemaji. The youth was reportedly missing and later found with a leg injury. The identity of the individual allegedly responsible for the shooting and the sequence of events remain unclear.
Following this incident, tensions reportedly increased between the residents of Dhemaji and Lower Siang, raising concerns in border areas of the state. Reports also indicate growing anxiety among the missing and Galo communities.
The Assam government has intensified efforts to control and normalize the situation in collaboration with officials from Arunachal Pradesh. Previously, the two northeastern states have faced disputes regarding their border, prompting calls for intervention at both administrative and local levels to prevent further conflicts.
