Tragedy Strikes at Bihars Shitala Temple: FIR Filed Against 40 Individuals

Patna, April 1: A tragic incident occurred at the renowned Shitala Devi Temple in Maghda, Nalanda district, Bihar, where a stampede on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of eight devotees and left several others injured. Worship activities resumed at the temple on Wednesday as devotees gathered to pay their respects.

In response to the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed at the Dipnagar police station, naming 40 individuals as accused. Four arrests have been made in connection with the case. The FIR was registered based on a written complaint by police officer Mausami Kumari, implicating 20 named individuals, including members of the temple management committee, and 20 unidentified persons.

The allegations suggest that the temple committee failed to inform the police about crowd management for the festival. It is claimed that obstacles were deliberately placed near the sanctum for illegal collection, and instead of controlling the crowd, there were reports of physical altercations with the devotees.

Local residents attribute the stampede to a lack of proper arrangements at the temple and its surroundings. The primary causes of the incident will be determined after an investigation. This temple has long been a center of faith, attracting large crowds every Tuesday, including visitors from Patna and nearby areas.

Historically, the Shitala Temple has been a significant place of worship, drawing devotees in large numbers every Tuesday, resembling a fair. The tradition of hoisting a flag during the Ram Navami festival has been practiced for centuries, and it is believed that every devotee who visits the temple has their wishes fulfilled.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has announced a compensation of six lakh rupees for the families of the deceased. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed sorrow over the incident, extending condolences to the victims’ families. Additionally, the central government has announced financial assistance of two lakh rupees for the families of those who lost their lives and fifty thousand rupees for the injured.
