Surge in PNG Connections: 342,000 New Connections Established

New Delhi, April 4: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reported a significant acceleration in the expansion of piped natural gas (PNG) connections. Since March 2026, 342,000 new PNG connections have been established, alongside 370,000 new registrations.

The ministry has directed states to assist in providing new PNG connections for both domestic and commercial consumers.

The government has assured citizens of the adequate availability of petrol, diesel, and LPG. Citizens are urged not to panic-buy fuel or make unnecessary LPG bookings. They are advised to utilize digital platforms for booking LPG cylinders and to avoid visiting gas agencies without necessity.

The ministry has promoted the use of alternative fuels such as PNG, induction, and electric cooktops in households. It has also emphasized the importance of energy conservation in the current circumstances.

The government has cautioned the public to stay vigilant against rumors and to rely solely on official sources for information.

In light of supply challenges due to the Iran conflict, the government has prioritized domestic LPG and PNG, while also giving high priority to hospitals and educational institutions.

Several measures have been implemented to address both supply and demand, including increasing refinery production and extending the LPG booking interval from 21 to 25 days in urban areas, and up to 45 days in rural areas.

To reduce LPG demand, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been made available. The Coal Ministry has instructed Coal India and Singareni Collieries to allocate more coal to states.

The government has also suggested that states consider targeted distribution of 5-kilogram LPG cylinders based on local needs. Since March 23, over 500,000 small cylinders have been sold, with more than 67,000 sold just on Thursday.

The Petroleum Secretary held a meeting with senior officials from all states and union territories to review fuel supply and prioritize LPG distribution for essential services. Strict monitoring of hoarding, diversion, and misinformation has also been mandated.

States have dismissed reports of any disruptions in LPG supply to migrant workers, stating that supply remains completely normal and stable.
