The Sacred Legacy of Veni Madhav in Prayagraj: A Must-Visit Pilgrimage Site

Prayagraj, April 4: Located near the holy city of Kashi, Prayagraj, also known as ‘Sangam Nagari’, is steeped in spirituality. The guardian of this city is Narayan. Within it lies an ancient and sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Vishnu, which is not just a religious destination but also a living testament to the Treta Yuga. It is believed that a pilgrimage to Prayagraj is incomplete without visiting the Narayan temple.

According to legends and Puranas, the history of the Shri Veni Madhav Temple is linked to the Treta Yuga. This temple, associated with the protection of the Triveni Sangam and the Madhav form of Lord Vishnu, holds significant mythological importance. The Padma Purana states that Lord Vishnu resides in Prayagraj as Veni Madhav. The tale recounts how, during the Treta Yuga, the demon Gajakarn tormented the three worlds. To protect the Triveni (Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati), Lord Vishnu vanquished Gajakarn. Upon the prayers of Triveni Ji, Lord Vishnu granted a boon to reside permanently in the form of Veni Madhav in Prayagraj, making him the principal deity and protector of Triveni.

Inside the temple, the idol of Madhav, made from black Shaligram stone, is enshrined in the sanctum. Alongside it is the idol of Triveni Ji, both crafted from the same black stone, with Madhav holding a conch and a discus. This main temple is renowned by several names, including Nagar Devta and Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The main entrance features inscriptions in golden letters stating ‘Nagar Devta’ and ‘Madhav Sakal Kaam Saadho’.

Chaitanya Mahaprabhu also resided here during his time in Prayagraj, engaging in bhajan and kirtan. In Prayagraj, Lord Vishnu is worshipped in twelve forms, known as the Dwadash Madhav, with Veni Madhav being the principal deity. The other eleven forms include Chakra Madhav, Gada Madhav, Padma Madhav, Anant Madhav, Bindu Madhav, Manohar Madhav, Asi Madhav, Sankat Haran Madhav, Aadi Veni Madhav, Aadi Vat Madhav, and Shankh Madhav. Chakra Madhav is considered to be endowed with fourteen Mahavidyas, and worshipping him is believed to bestow knowledge.

Aadi Vat Madhav is also referred to as Mool Madhav, as during the time of dissolution, Lord Madhav merges into the Banyan tree and manifests in various forms during creation.

The Shri Veni Madhav Temple is located approximately 7 kilometers from Prayagraj Junction, near Dashashwamedh Ghat in the Daraganj area. It is easily accessible via auto-rickshaws, taxis, or by road. The temple is open from 5 AM to 12 PM and 4 PM to 8 PM.

Special prayers and rituals are held on significant days such as Krishna Janmashtami, Purnima, Anant Chaturdashi, and Ekadashi, attracting devotees from far and wide who come to seek blessings from Lord Veni Madhav and fulfill their wishes.
