Chlorine Gas Leak in Jhabua: 49 Hospitalized After Incident

Bhopal, April 4: A chlorine gas leak occurred at a gas filtration plant in Thandla, Jhabua district, on Friday morning due to a technical malfunction. This incident affected both plant employees and local residents.

The leak caused panic in the area, with many individuals reporting difficulty breathing, irritation in their eyes and throat, and feelings of anxiety. The district administration responded swiftly, bringing the situation under control. A high-level rescue team, including Sub-Divisional Magistrate Gachle, Chief Municipal Officer Kamlesh Jaiswal, and District Commandant S.D. Pillai, arrived on-site promptly.

An industrial unit from Meghnagar also provided technical assistance. Experts from Indore have been dispatched to inspect the remaining tanks and assess the plant’s safety.

According to the Block Medical Officer of Thandla, an initial group of 20-25 individuals with breathing difficulties was admitted to the hospital. As a precaution, the health department conducted door-to-door surveys, monitoring those with mild symptoms. Currently, 49 patients are receiving treatment, and all are reported to be in stable condition.

The District Collector issued a statement confirming that the chlorine gas leak was caused by a technical failure at the gas filtration plant. Thanks to the prompt response from the administration and rescue teams, the situation has been managed effectively. All affected individuals are receiving appropriate medical care. A technical team is inspecting the site, and the health department is ensuring that no one is left unexamined.

Senior officials have confirmed that the leak has been contained, and there is no further threat to the public. The plant has been temporarily shut down for safety inspections.

Local residents expressed relief at the administration’s quick response but also called for a thorough investigation into the causes of the malfunction and stricter safety regulations at the plant. Meanwhile, the district administration has assured full support to the affected families and urged the public to remain calm.
