Kolkata, May 27: Lawyer Rinki Chatterjee Singh has claimed that she faced refusal from the police in Siliguri, West Bengal, when attempting to file a complaint against former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Singh alleged that she tried to register an FIR for two separate incidents but was denied by the authorities.
The first incident dates back to 2025, during an Eid prayer event on Red Road in Kolkata, which Mamata Banerjee attended. Singh accused the former Chief Minister of following Muslim customs during the event and making offensive remarks about Hinduism from the public platform.
Feeling deeply hurt by these comments, Singh went to the Pradhan Nagar police station to file her complaint. She alleged that the station officer not only refused to accept her complaint but also treated her disrespectfully. Despite her attempts to submit a written complaint and application, the police officer declined to take them.
Singh further claimed that when she inquired about the reason for this refusal and began recording the conversation, the police officer still refused to register her complaint. She expressed that it seemed the police were reluctant to take action against leaders or ministers of the ruling party.
This is not the first time Singh has faced such a situation. She alleged that she had previously attempted to file complaints against several controversial statements made by leaders of the Trinamool Congress but was met with disappointment each time.
Singh accused some Trinamool Congress leaders of making objectionable remarks about Hinduism and deities. She stated that every time she sought to file an FIR regarding these matters, she was humiliated and her complaints went unregistered.
Despite being a lawyer, Singh expressed feeling helpless in this situation. She claimed that taking action against individuals associated with the ruling party has become exceedingly difficult.
Additionally, Singh mentioned that she attempted to file a complaint against Mamata Banerjee regarding statements made during a protest rally during this year’s assembly election campaign, but again faced inaction from the police.
