Kolkata, June 8: The political landscape in West Bengal is buzzing with speculation as some members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) consider supporting the BJP-led NDA. TMC MLA Kunal Ghosh has raised concerns about the implications of this move on the party’s credibility.
In a conversation with reporters, Ghosh pointed out that the leaders rumored to be aligning with the NDA are the same individuals who secured their tickets by rallying behind former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, chanting “Didi, Didi.” He questioned how these leaders could now contemplate joining the BJP, calling it a betrayal of public trust. According to him, such political maneuvering is viewed unfavorably by the electorate and could severely damage the leaders’ reputations.
Ghosh clarified that this issue extends beyond state politics, linking it to national political dynamics. He emphasized that he is merely a state spokesperson and that official comments on national decisions should come from senior party leaders, particularly those leading in the Lok Sabha. He also mentioned that this topic is under serious consideration at higher levels within the party.
Meanwhile, TMC MLA Ashok Deb responded to significant organizational changes within the party. He stated that he learned about Chandraima Bhattacharya’s appointment as state president through the media, indicating a lack of prior official communication regarding this decision. This has raised questions about the internal dialogue and organizational processes within the party.
Additionally, Ghosh commented on the political stance of senior leader Sukendu Shekhar Roy, noting that some leaders have a history of leaving and returning to the party. He characterized this as a personal political choice and refrained from further commentary.
While Ghosh did not fully blame the BJP for the potential defection of certain leaders, he criticized those departing the party for engaging in “cheap politics,” which he believes raises questions about their political futures. He asserted that the trend of joining the BJP may reflect the strategic thinking of several leaders, but it will not weaken the TMC.
