Telangana Government Assures Farmers on Wet Rice Procurement

Hyderabad, May 28: Telangana’s Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy reassured farmers on Wednesday that there is no need to panic regarding wet rice due to recent rains. He stated that the state government has activated a comprehensive emergency response mechanism to ensure the procurement of every grain of wet rice reaching the procurement centers.

During a video conference with ministers, district collectors, senior civil supplies officials, and police officers, Reddy convened a review meeting in light of the unexpected rainfall and adverse weather conditions affecting rice procurement in several districts.

Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, and Civil Supplies Commissioner Stephen Ravindra also participated in the review meeting.

Reddy emphasized that the government is closely monitoring procurement activities daily and setting district-wise procurement targets. While many districts have performed well, some areas experienced unseasonal rains, causing wet rice at procurement centers, which necessitated immediate administrative intervention.

So far, Telangana has recorded an arrival of 6.675 million tons of rice, with approximately 5.7 million tons already procured. The government has directly transferred ₹10,096 crores to the accounts of over 814,000 farmers under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme.

Complaints regarding wet rice have been received from 17 districts, amounting to around 9,214 tons. In a large overnight rescue operation, officials successfully transported nearly 95% of the wet rice to boiling rice mills, preventing significant crop loss.

Following the government’s weather warning, district collectors, RDOs, additional collectors, tehsildars, and civil supplies teams were placed on high alert. Vehicles were deployed early in the morning to ensure the swift transport of wet rice stocks from procurement centers to mills.

Approximately 900,000 tons of rice procurement remains, with an expected 810,000 tons coming from fields where harvesting is ongoing, particularly in districts like Siddipet, Nagarkurnool, and Jagtiyal.
