Mumbai, June 7: Surya Kumar Yadav has expressed his happiness over Shreyas Iyer being appointed as the new captain of the Indian men’s T20 team. Yadav, who has played alongside Iyer for a long time, stated that he is “very, very, very happy” for his fellow Mumbai player, calling it a proud moment for Mumbai cricket.
Iyer has taken over the captaincy from Yadav, and the two met shortly after the announcement during a T20 Mumbai League match on Saturday. In this match, Yadav was leading the “Triumph Knights MNE,” while Iyer participated as an “impact substitute” for the “Sobo Mumbai Falcons.”
Before the match began, the two Mumbai stars warmly greeted each other with a hug. During the toss, Yadav congratulated Iyer on taking charge of the Indian men’s T20 cricket team. He said, “As you mentioned, a lot is happening, but obviously, I am very, very, very happy for Shreyas, as he gets the chance to lead the Indian T20 team. We have played a lot of cricket together in Bombay. What stands out to me is that Mumbai has had three consecutive captains leading the T20 team for India. I think this is a proud moment, and everyone should celebrate it.”
This was Yadav’s first public reaction following the BCCI’s announcement of significant changes in India’s T20 setup, including Iyer’s appointment. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledged that removing Yadav from captaincy was a tough decision, especially after he led India to victory in the T20 World Cup earlier this year. However, the selectors opted for a new leadership direction with an eye on the next World Cup cycle, highlighting Iyer’s strong leadership skills and consistent performance across all formats.
