Mumbai, June 6: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian team for the T20 series against Ireland and England, as well as for the 2026 Asian Games. Surya Kumar Yadav, who led the Indian team to victory in the T20 World Cup 2026, has lost his place as captain and player in the squad. His childhood coach, Ashok Asawalkar, attributed this to Yadav’s disappointing form.
In an interview, Asawalkar stated, “For the past year and a half, Surya has not been scoring runs. Under his captaincy, Team India has won the World Cup and all bilateral series. However, his individual performance has been concerning. Therefore, the selectors opted for a new captain, leading to this change. Surya must perform well to regain his spot in the team.”
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain for the T20 format. Asawalkar commented on this decision, saying, “Shreyas Iyer is playing exceptionally well and has shown great leadership. I am confident he will continue to perform in the future.”
The team also includes 15-year-old explosive left-handed batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi, making him the youngest cricketer to join Team India. Asawalkar remarked, “I have always said he is a fantastic player and will one day represent Team India.”
Cricket coach Sukhwinder Singh Bawa noted the captaincy change, stating, “The captain was changed because Surya Kumar Yadav was not scoring enough runs. Perhaps that is why a new captain was brought in. Over the last two to three years, he has also been leading Punjab Kings well.”
Shreyas Iyer, who last played a T20 for India on December 3, 2023, is making his return as captain of Team India.
