Alexandra Ella Makes History at Wimbledon, Advances to Third Round

London, July 2: In a remarkable display of skill, Alexandra Ella from the Philippines triumphed over Maya Joint at the All England Club on Thursday, winning the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-0. This victory marks Ella’s first advancement to the third round of Wimbledon. The match concluded in under two hours, making it a memorable moment for the young athlete.

Initially, Australia’s Joint took the lead, showcasing the same impressive form she displayed in her recent victory against Serena Williams. However, Ella made a strong comeback. In the decisive set, the 21-year-old secured an early crucial break, sealing her victory.

Last year, Ella faced Joint in a nail-biting match in the Eastbourne final, which ended in a tiebreak at 12-10 against her. With this win at Wimbledon, Ella has leveled the score.

Earlier, Mary Bouzkova and Emma Navarro also secured their spots in the women’s singles third round.

Seeded 21st, Bouzkova overcame an early break in the first set to defeat Grant 7-5, 6-3, marking her third appearance in the Wimbledon third round. She will face last year’s quarterfinalist, Liudmila Samsonova, who advanced by defeating 15th seed Diana Schneider 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In their head-to-head encounters on the WTA Tour, Samsonova leads 3-2; however, Bouzkova won their only previous match on grass.

Meanwhile, Emma Navarro defeated Oksana Selechmeteva 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, making her third consecutive appearance in the third round at the All England Club. The American player reached the quarterfinals in 2024 and the fourth round last year. In the next round, she will face either 12th seed Marta Kostyuk or Anna Blinkova.
