Kolkata, June 21: A tragic road accident occurred in the Maynaguri area of Jalpaiguri district, West Bengal, where a North Bengal State Transport Corporation bus collided with a stationary truck. The horrific incident resulted in the death of four individuals, while 57 passengers sustained injuries, with 10 reported in critical condition.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari expressed his deep sorrow over the incident. He took to social media platform ‘X’ to extend condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery for the injured.
The Chief Minister announced that the state government has intensified relief and rescue operations, with district administration and police present at the scene. He instructed senior ministers to oversee the relief efforts and ensure that the injured receive immediate and adequate medical care.
The government has declared compensation of ₹500,000 for the families of the deceased, ₹100,000 for those seriously injured, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries. Additionally, the state government will cover the entire medical expenses for the injured at government hospitals.
Authorities stated that a detailed investigation is underway to determine the actual causes of the accident.
Reports indicate that the bus was operating on the Maynaguri-Domohani route when the collision occurred near the Uladabari area. The impact was so severe that many passengers were critically injured. All injured individuals were promptly admitted to Jalpaiguri Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment.
Local administration and police have initiated relief and rescue operations at the site. Preliminary investigations suggest that the bus struck the truck parked by the roadside; however, the exact reasons for the accident are still being examined.
