Sonam Wangchuk Hospitalized Amid Ongoing Hunger Strike, Police Enhance Security

New Delhi, July 18: Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, has been admitted to Safdarjung Hospital. Today marks the 21st day of his protest. On Saturday morning, Delhi police cited a High Court order to remove him from the protest site for medical reasons. Security has been tightened outside Safdarjung Hospital.

Police teams are stationed both inside and outside the hospital to ensure that supporters of Wangchuk do not enter the premises. Paramedical staff have also been deployed for added security.

Wangchuk’s wife, Geetanjali Angmo, has arrived at the hospital. She posted on social media platform ‘X’, stating, “I am at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, where Sonam Wangchuk has been admitted. No medication or treatment should be administered to him orally or intravenously without my consent, the family’s consent, or that of the doctors who have been monitoring his health for the past 20 days.”

Earlier, as Wangchuk was being taken to the hospital, Delhi police faced resistance from protesters. There was a brief scuffle between police officers and demonstrators, who chanted slogans against the government and police administration. The police team carefully escorted Wangchuk from the stage and transported him to the hospital via ambulance.

Currently, the situation at the protest site is under control, and there have been no reports of any unpleasant incidents or disturbances. Police are taking necessary steps to maintain law and order.

Delhi police announced on ‘X’ that due to Wangchuk’s deteriorating health, he was shifted to the hospital for essential medical care, following High Court orders and medical experts’ advice. Although protesters attempted to obstruct the process, the police handled the situation with restraint and completed the transfer safely. They urged the protesters at Jantar Mantar to vacate the area peacefully as soon as possible.

DCP Sachin Sharma spoke to the media, stating, “As per the High Court’s directives and based on health conditions and medical advice, Sonam Wangchuk has been taken to a government hospital for necessary medical treatment. He is currently under medical supervision.”
