New Delhi, July 18: Delhi Police took social activist Sonam Wangchuk into custody on Saturday morning from Jantar Mantar, where he had been on a hunger strike for the past 20 days. Authorities stated that Wangchuk was hospitalized due to concerns over his deteriorating health and required urgent medical care. Additionally, the police urged protesters to vacate the area.
On Saturday morning, a team from Delhi Police arrived at the protest site and escorted Wangchuk away. During this, members of the ‘Cockroach People’s Party’ protested and chanted slogans against Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Delhi Police announced on the social media platform ‘X’ that this action was taken based on court orders and medical advice.
A post from the DCP New Delhi’s ‘X’ handle read, “In light of Sonam Wangchuk’s declining health, he has been hospitalized for necessary medical care, following High Court orders and medical expert advice.”
The police also reported that some protesters attempted to obstruct the process. However, they maintained composure while executing their duties. The ‘X’ post stated, “While following High Court orders, protesters attempted to create a disturbance, leading to some chaos. Nevertheless, the police exercised restraint and completed the process safely.”
The police appealed to the protesters to vacate Jantar Mantar peacefully. The ‘X’ post said, “We urge the protesters present at Jantar Mantar to vacate the area peacefully as soon as possible.”
It is noteworthy that the Delhi High Court had instructed two days prior that Wangchuk’s health should be monitored daily by government doctors, ensuring all necessary medical efforts are made to safeguard his life. The court emphasized, “We want government doctors to conduct regular check-ups. Life is invaluable.”
The court also directed that appropriate measures should be taken if there is any deterioration in his health.
