Mehsana, September 1: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has arrested a police constable and a local resident in Mehsana district, Gujarat, for accepting a bribe of ₹83,000. The operation took place at the Satlasana police station.
The arrests followed a complaint made to the ACB’s toll-free helpline, 1064. Officials reported this incident on Tuesday.
The accused have been identified as constable Kanji Chaudhary, stationed at the Satlasana police station, and Ashish Chaudhary, a resident of Chowdhari Vas in Nawawas-Rajpur, Satlasana.
According to the ACB, the entire bribe amount of ₹83,000 was recovered during the operation. The complaint alleged that a gambling case had been registered against the complainant and several others at the Satlasana police station.
As a result, the complainant and others were required to appear at the police station. The ACB claims that constable Kanji Chaudhary demanded ₹1 lakh from the complainant to prevent any violence against him and others during their appearance at the station.
After negotiations, the bribe amount was settled at ₹83,000, and an agreement was made for payment on Monday. The complainant then contacted the ACB’s toll-free number to file a complaint.
Based on this complaint, the bureau set up a sting operation on Monday (August 31). During the operation, both accused remained in contact with the complainant via phone and received the ₹83,000. This transaction occurred in a friend’s car on a public road in front of Suraj Complex in Satlasana.
Following the transaction, the ACB team apprehended the accused on-site and seized the entire bribe amount of ₹83,000. Officials stated that further legal action is being initiated regarding this crime.
Authorities noted, “The sting was orchestrated by Inspector D.B. Mehta and his team from ACB Field-3 in Ahmedabad.” The investigation will determine if there have been any similar cases involving the constable in the past.
