Kolkata, September 1: The niece of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reportedly took her own life on Tuesday. Police confirmed that Brishti Mukhopadhyay, daughter of Mamata’s cousin Nihar Mukhopadhyay, was found hanging at her home in Rampurhat, Birbhum district.
Authorities discovered Brishti’s body on the second floor of her residence in the Kusumba village area of Rampurhat early Tuesday morning. Family members immediately alerted the police. Officers from the Rampurhat police station arrived at the scene and took possession of the body, which has been sent to Rampurhat Government Medical College for an autopsy. The reasons behind Brishti Mukhopadhyay’s tragic decision remain unclear.
Nihar Mukhopadhyay stated, “My daughter has been struggling with mental health issues for the past five to six years. We regularly consulted doctors. I don’t know how this happened. At that time, we were on the ground floor of the house.” The Rampurhat police have initiated an investigation into the incident.
Notably, Brishti Mukhopadhyay faced allegations of corruption related to the recruitment of primary teachers and Group-C positions in state schools. Reports indicate that her name appeared on a list of job cancellations issued by the West Bengal Central School Service Commission following a directive from the Calcutta High Court. She was listed at number 608 on this list. However, she resigned shortly after joining the position, citing personal reasons.
Local sources also revealed that Brishti had been involved in a divorce case with her husband for several months. They were married in Ayash village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Rampurhat police station. It has also come to light that they have a 12-year-old child. Authorities are investigating whether her death is connected to her family situation. Mamata Banerjee’s ancestral home is located in Chakipur village, Block No. 1 of Rampurhat, with her uncle’s house nearby in Kusumba village.
The area is now engulfed in mourning following Brishti’s death. Police have stated that clear information regarding the cause of death will be available only after the autopsy report is released.
