Azamgarh, June 13: The Azamgarh police have swiftly cracked the shocking murder case of 70-year-old Bhual Chauhan, arresting the suspect just 48 hours after the crime. The police apprehended the accused following a dramatic encounter, recovering a knife, a firearm, and other crucial evidence linked to the murder.
According to reports, Karmraj Chauhan, a resident of Sheikhpura village, informed the police that his father, Bhual Chauhan, was sleeping in a room near the cattle shed after dinner on the night of June 10-11. During this time, an unknown assailant attacked him, slitting his throat with a sharp weapon. A case was registered at the Kotwali police station, prompting an immediate investigation.
Under the guidance of Senior Superintendent of Police Dr. Anil Kumar, a dedicated police team was formed to locate the suspect. On the night of June 12, authorities received a tip-off that the accused might be heading towards the expressway on a motorcycle, armed with illegal weapons. Acting on this information, the police set up a blockade and initiated a checking operation in the area.
As the suspect realized he was cornered, he attempted to flee but lost control of his motorcycle and fell. Despite warnings to surrender, he opened fire on the police team. In the ensuing exchange, he sustained a gunshot wound to his right leg and was subsequently arrested and taken to the district hospital for treatment.
During interrogation, the arrested individual, Abhay Chauhan alias Mattu (24), son of Dheerjan Chauhan, revealed that he held a grudge against Bhual Chauhan stemming from a violent incident involving his mother approximately 15 years ago. This longstanding animosity led him to murder Bhual Chauhan while he was asleep. The police recovered a Splendor motorcycle, a .315 bore firearm, a spent cartridge, a live round, two knives (including the murder weapon), a blood-stained white scarf, and a black T-shirt soaked in blood from the suspect’s possession.
Authorities have confirmed that charges of murder, violations of the Arms Act, and firing on police personnel have been filed against the suspect at the Kotwali police station, and further legal action is underway.
City Officer Shubham Todi stated that the police received information about the murder on June 11, and a team was promptly dispatched to the scene under the supervision of senior officials. To ensure a swift resolution, four special teams were formed. The encounter with the suspect occurred on June 12, resulting in his injury and subsequent hospitalization. During the encounter, the police successfully recovered the murder weapon and other significant evidence.
Investigations revealed that the motive behind the murder was rooted in a long-standing feud between the suspect’s mother and the victim. Legal proceedings are ongoing in this case.
