Jammu, June 16: The Indian Army’s Northern Command, based in Udhampur, announced on Tuesday its collaborative efforts with local communities to eliminate drug abuse in Jammu and Kashmir.
In a post on social media platform X, the Northern Command stated, “Developed and drug-free Jammu and Kashmir: Northern Command is working alongside the people of Jammu and Kashmir through awareness programs, public outreach campaigns, and community participation as part of a 100-day drug eradication initiative aimed at addressing the dangers of substance abuse throughout the Union Territory.”
The ‘Drug-Free Jammu and Kashmir Campaign’ has achieved significant success during its extensive 100-day effort. This initiative has reached over 10 million people and has taken action against illegal drug trafficking networks across the region.
More than 1.6 million awareness programs have been conducted in schools, villages, and panchayats, engaging over 10 million participants. To enhance grassroots awareness and monitoring, 7,000 women’s committees have been established.
To oversee awareness activities, 20 senior officials have been appointed as district mentors.
Under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, over 850 FIRs have been registered, leading to the arrest of more than 900 drug traffickers and suppliers.
In actions against drug-related gangs and establishments, assets worth over ₹480 million have been seized.
Surveillance in border areas has been strengthened. Security agencies have employed AI-based monitoring systems and night vision equipment to intercept drug drops via drones.
The campaign emphasizes not only arrests but also the rehabilitation and counseling of youth affected by addiction, helping thousands overcome substance abuse.
Forty-nine sensitive “drug hotspots” have been identified in the region, where targeted operations have been conducted.
To provide easier access to de-addiction services, the Drug-Free Jammu and Kashmir portal has been launched, offering courses, counseling, and support services.
The 100-day campaign was inaugurated on April 6 by Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who stated that stringent measures, such as the cancellation of passports, driving licenses, Aadhaar cards, and registration certificates of seized vehicles, are also being implemented against those caught in the drug crackdown.
