Hubli, April 24: A tragic incident has emerged from the Uday Nagar area of Hubli, Northern Karnataka, where a 14-year-old boy took his own life after his mother refused to give him a mobile phone.
According to police reports, the boy had developed an addiction to his mobile device and had been engrossed in an online game for several days. On Thursday night, his mother expressed concern over his excessive phone usage and scolded him. She instructed him to stop using the phone and focus on his studies, subsequently taking the device away from him.
Distressed by this, the boy retreated to his room and locked the door. After about 20 minutes of silence, his father peered through the window and discovered his son hanging from a sari.
The parents immediately broke down the door and rushed the boy to the hospital, but doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissioner N. Shashidhar stated, “The mother objected to the boy’s phone addiction and confiscated the device. Shortly after, the boy locked himself in his room and hanged himself using a sari.”
The police commissioner warned parents against abruptly taking phones away from children who are already addicted. The Keshavapura police have registered a case and initiated an investigation.
“This is a very tragic incident. It is concerning that children may take such drastic steps when denied mobile phone usage. Parents also have responsibilities in these situations,” he remarked.
He added, “Children do not become addicted to mobile phones and gaming overnight. We have observed that many parents hand their children phones to keep them quiet. Sometimes, they allow them to use the phone for an hour or more while feeding or during study time.”
He emphasized that children often exert emotional pressure on their parents, leading to sudden confiscation of phones without understanding the consequences. If a child’s addiction is severe, seeking advice from a psychologist or doctor is preferable to abruptly taking the phone away. Gradually reducing phone usage is a more effective approach.
“I urge all parents to recognize that mobile phone addiction can be very harmful. There are very few examples of individuals achieving significant success through excessive mobile use,” he stated.
He also noted that mobile phones can be used constructively. Students can learn English, grammar, and other skills through YouTube and online courses. Many students who scored full marks in their 10th-grade board exams reported that they stayed away from distracting devices like mobile phones.
He stressed the importance of awareness and vigilance among both parents and students for proper child upbringing.
